Dry Needling (also known as Medical Acupuncture) is a form of treatment where very fine needles are inserted into contracted parts of muscles to ease tension and pain.

Muscles contract and relax during movement, however, sometimes they get stuck in a contraction, this is known as a trigger point. Trigger points can be a source of referred or focal pain upon palpation. The needles stimulate the tissue to relax, so the muscle can function properly with its counterparts, thereby giving the joint good quality and range in motion.

What to expect

You will be asked to expose the area affected, so shorts and vests are recommended.
During treatment some can patients experience slight discomfort on insertion of the needle and some have muscle twitching, but mostly they don’t feel anything other than a slight pressure.

The treated area can be sore for up to 48 hours after treatment, this is to be expected but can last for shorter periods. During this time it’s recommended to stay clear of strenuous activities, especially known triggers.

Some acute areas may only need a small amount of treatment while more chronic areas require longer periods, usually around 15 minutes.
